We test soil compaction before we ever set a form, and we don't add extra water to the mix just to make the pour go faster. Control joints go in the same day we finish the slab, cut where we want the concrete to crack instead of leaving it to pick its own spot. We use rebar instead of wire mesh on anything that's going to carry a vehicle, because mesh has a habit of sinking to the bottom of the slab during the pour. None of that shows once the concrete is finished, but it's the difference between a driveway that lasts twenty years and one that needs patching in five.
